In his blog at SelfPublishing.org today, Ron Pramschufer posted a great article on having your books printed. Being a solid do-it-yourselfer, and having a print shop in the family, I have to admit that hunting for a printer has never been a huge priority for me. I have never really had to deal with the hassle. But I have talked to many authors and publishers who have. I usually point them to this printer or that (my favorite for a while now is InstantPublisher.com.) I have always just figured that educating yourself about the printing process and shopping a good printer was part of the publishing process. Part of the fun, as it were.
But Pramschufer, founder of SelfPublishing.org and www.BooksJustBooks.com, makes a really good point. There is power in numbers. What Pramschufer has done via BooksJustBooks.com is organize thousands of indie publishers under one “roof,” and used that volume to leverage better pricing and better treatment from dozens of printers. Great idea.
I have to add that Pramschufer’s site SelfPublishing.org has been a shining light of truth in the self-publishing world. Ron is working hard to break down the myths, misunderstanding and untruths, and guiding people along the path to true self-publishing. His site cleanly lays out the steps you will likely want to take on the way to truly self-publishing your book… and he steers potential publishers away from the hazards of subsidy presses.
For my own publishing projects, I don’t know, I think I will stick with what works for me. I enjoy the printing process enough that I look forward to working with my printer directly. But for so many of you who would do well to spend you time on your books in other ways… you might want to think about what Ron is saying.
At the very least, check out his post. There is a lot of food for thought there… and you may just learn a little about printing.
