Hey there!

I know, my posts have been slight here over the past couple of weeks. But that’s for a great reason!

I have been working really hard producing the new IndieBookMan Show podcast, and it’s coming along really great.

We are looking at a much different format than the radio show was. Instead of 1 hour long live-recorded shows, we are working on 25 minute long podcasts that contained produced pieces focusing on a specific theme. Each podcast may include interviews, editorials, taped pieces, how-to tips, sketches and more.

It’s turned out to be a LOT more work than I expected, but I think we are going to be very proud of the results. And we have a great team working hard to make it all happen, so I am really excited to have you hear how it all turns out.

We are still on deadline to release the first of the weekly series on Nov 17th at 8:00pm est right here at IndieBookMan.com, so please stay tuned and listen in when the time comes!

Thanks, and remember… The Indie Publishing Revolution starts now!

For various reasons, Umbrella Radio – who up until now has housed and produced and aired The IndieBookMan Radio Show – has ended all live programing. Thus, effectively ending production of our show.

I was sad. I have really enjoyed working with Eric and the rest of the crew at Umbrella, and I have really enjoyed the experience of creating, running and hosting the show. I have met and spoken with some really great people over the course of the show and I knew I would miss it.

I mourned the loss for about 3 minutes.

Because it took about 3 minutes for the gears to start spinning in my head. I began to wonder; Could the show rise from these ashes and become something new? Maybe something… better?

I thought maybe, just maybe it could.

So I began to check in with some friends. Fortunately, most of my friends are mad scientists of one stripe or another… writers, musicians, audio engineers (with ABC and NPR credits, to their names no less!!!) I started to put together something I didn’t have before – a production team!

And with this team I have started to completely re-envision what the show could look, er, sound like.

We finished our first production meeting about 20 minutes ago, and I think I speak for the whole team when I say… we all left the meeting pretty darn excited.

The show will be tighter, shorter, weekly, and will contain segments that are much more “produced” woven through a live-recorded format.

I think it’s going to be really good.

So stay tuned as we get closer to the launch, I will surely post more here.

And, as an official announcement (and to keep us honest) the launch date of the inaugural episode of the reborn show will be… November 17th, 2010 at 8:00 pm, right here at IndieBookMan.com.

So keep your eyes open and your calendar clear because the Indie Publishing Revolutoin… starts now!

And I would espcially like to thank Eric Willison and everyone at Umbrella for all of your help and support over the past year. I would also like to thank Sahffi who has served as our house band throughout the first iteration of the show. And finally, I would like to thank all of the guests who have allowed me to subject them to an hour of my curiosity and questions. I can’t say enough how much I enjoyed our run there and am forever appreciative for the opportunity and education. Thank you!

Our favorite Baltimore related zine (OK, our favorite zine altogether,) Smile Hon, You’re In Baltimore, published by Eight Stone Press, is launching it’s latest issue this month: Waste. We wanted to help them celebrate, and we wanted a chance to get some of Baltimore best “underground” writers to come by the studio to read some of there work on the air.

So, we have invited editor William P Tandy to come down, and bring a handful of the Waste issue contributors to talk about the zine, writing in Baltimore and to read their contributions.

Alex Hewett, Gavin Heck, Fernando Quijano III and William P Tandy, and perhaps others, will be joining is for the conversation.

It’s going to be a great time, and certainly a lively conversation. I hope you can listen in!

What: IndieBookMan Radio Show #14: Distribution!
When: Wednesday, May 19th 8PM
Where: http://umbrellaradio.org
Who: Anyone who is interested in writing, reading or publishing indie books

NOTE: This is an online broadcast… you don’t even have to leave your house! Just tune in at http://umbrellaradio.org, relax and listen…

HOW do I get my book into bookstores? How do I get the big-box chain stores to notice my book? How to I get the attention of the hip indie book stores across the nation?

You want to know how? Here is how: Distribution. A funny little word that means so much in the publishing industry, and is so often misunderstood.

Well, we’re going to clear up a lot of the mystery behind distribution on The IndieBookMan this week. Our guest is Davida Breier. Davida knows more than anyone I know about how distribution works, why you would or would not want to mess with it, and how you can make it work for you.

We will be talking about:

- What you would need to do to line up major distribution
- Is distribution right for you and your book?
- How to get by if you decide to forgo formal distribution channels
- And SO MUCH MORE!

So if you have ever wondered how all of this “Getting my book in bookstores” business works – and if you have a book you’d better be wondering about that – than this is exactly the show for you.

Davida Breier is the Manager for Hopkins Fulfillment Services (HFS), the distribution division at Johns Hopkins University Press. She’s worked for National Book Network (NBN), where she was the Marketing Director and oversaw NBN Fusion, a digital publishing and distribution initiative. Prior to that, she was the Sales and Marketing Director for Biblio Distribution, managing over 500 independent presses. She is also a board member for the non-profit publisher, No Voice Unheard and is a contributing writer and photographer for their new book Ninety-Five: Meeting America’s Farmed Animals in Stories and Photographs.

Davida has been involved in small press since 1994 and has published 70 zines with two more planned for this summer.

You really really don’t want to miss this show.

Obviously, every author dreams of one thing – that major label publishing contract. But what if you got it, and found out it wasn’t everything everyone dreams of? What if, in fact, it turned out to be a pretty terrible experience – bad for you and bad for your book?

Then, what if you published your next book independently and found out it was… wonderful?

This week on the IndieBookMan Radio Show #11: There and Back Again: Surviving the Trad Pub Experience, we are going to explore the idea of surviving and recovering from having been published by a traditional press. I know, you may be thinking this is an absurd idea – but it turns out to be a very real issue. So, if you are dreaming of that Big Break with a major publishing house, then listen in this week… you may be surprised.

Helping us explore this experience will be Baltimore writer and social policy consultant Jack Kammer. His book “Good Will Toward Men: Women Talk Candidly About the Balance of Power Between the Sexes” was publish by St. Martins Press in 1994 while his current book, “Heroes of the Blue Sky Rebellion,” as well as several other titles, was published under his own imprint, Healthy Village Press. Jack is in a very unique position to discuss and compare with us both sides of the publishing world.

So join Jack and I this Wednesday, March 17th at 8:00PM at http://umbrellaradio.org for a thorough exploration of surviving and recovering from a major publishing contract in what we are calling, There and Back Again: Surviving the Trad Pub Experience.

—

The IndieBookMan Radio Show covers all aspects of literature, writing, books and indie publishing in the Baltimore region and far beyond.

If you are interested in literature, books, writing or publishing, if you know you have a book inside of you and want to find out how to get it out into the world and into the hands of readers, then The IndieBookMan Radio Show is just what you need.

Hosted by AuthorsBookshop.com founder Brad Grochowski (a.k.a. the IndieBookMan) each show features an author, publisher or mover-and-shaker in the indie book world. We explore their history, walk through the steps they took to success, and find out a bit about their project.

Join us March 17th at 8:00 PM est at http://umbrellaradio.org for the live broadcast, listen to the archive at http://indiebookman.com or subscribe to the podcast at http://bit.ly/ibm_podcast

Tonight we are talking to a panel of musicians… picking their brains to see what we can learn from the indie music world and apply it to selling books.

With is tonight:

sahffi is a Peabody trained musician who, several months ago left her day-job to pursue music full-time. She has built a reputation for herself among the Baltimore music community for tirelessly promoting herself through her monthly email newsletter, facebook, blog, twitter and myspace. She also serves as our house band here on the IndieBookMan, and her music can be heard on pretty much every episode of our show. http://sahffi.com

Marc Evans is a local musician who’s sound is truly receiving international attention. Though his shows are very popular here in Mobtown, it’s the crowds in Asia and Europe that are packing venues with teens that sing his lyrics. In fact, we are really glad he made it back to Baltimore from a show in Italy in time to make to The IndieBookMan! Were going to talk to him about moving from a local to international audience. http://www.myspace.com/marcaevans

Rhonda Robinson is a full-time Baltimore based jazz vocalist/flutist. The Rhonda Robinson Quartet has distinguished itself performing at clubs, festivals, and events throughout the area. She brings to the table a slightly different angle, as she is not only working to promote her own music and band… but to keep the flame of Jazz and its history alive in the area. She has served as Artist-In-Residence in the Baltimore City Schools, and has trained with Grammy®-nominated jazz vocalist, Janet Lawson. http://www.myspace.com/rhondarobinson

Due to a series of unfortunate events, it was almost the last minute before I was able to get this weeks show together!

We are going in an unusual direction this week. None of my three guests have written or published a book. They don’t have any special knowledge about printing, editing or book marketing. In fact, they aren’t really book people at all! So, why are they stopping by the IndieBookMan for an interview?

I am not the first, or even the only, person to have noticed that the indie book market is following in the footsteps of the indie music scene. The tools that are becoming available to us now, the acceptance of the book-buying public as well as the community that is coalescing around indie books can be seen, perhaps, as an echo of the indie music scene 7 to 10 years ago. This is good news if the comparison follows through, as the indie music scene is exciting, vibrant and still growing rapidly.

So I am bringing in three indie musicians who have been flexing their marketing muscles to spread the word about their music – and succeeding – to see what their experience may have to offer those of us trying to sell books. What are they doing in the music world that can inform our efforts in the indie publishing community?

sahffi is a Peabody trained musician who, several months ago left her day-job to pursue music full-time.

So what are musicians doing to support themselves and each other? Join us on The IndieBookMan Radio Show as we spend an hour exploring exactly that.

Join all of us this Wednesday, March 3rd at 8:00PM at http://umbrellaradio.org for The IndieBookMan Radio Show: Follow The Music!

Well, the show went great this week. We had a little technical trouble getting Ellen in on the phone, but it worked out in the end and we had a great conversation.

I have some sad news though.

Due to a technical malfunction, the recording of the show did not work properly. Therefore, we have no archive and no podcast of show #9.

I know, your disappointed.

But hang on! Our next show, #10, is going to be so awesome you will forget all about missing #9!

I am calling the next show “Follow the Music” and I plan to have several musicians in the studio to talk about what the indie music world has learned about promoting indie music, and how we can apply that to indie publishing.

So, stay tuned for more info about that – it’s going to be a very different, exciting show!
